From decorating the tree to buying and wrapping presents for loved ones and attending festive parties, December is a busy month for all of us. But if you’re moving house before 2025, you’ve probably got more than mince pies on your plate!
So, what can you do to ensure your house move goes as smoothly as possible?
Read on to find out.
Plan ahead
Sounds obvious, but planning is what will get you through the move while allowing yourself to enjoy the festivities.
An ideal place to start is to book a local house moving service.
Confirm and double-check your move day and ensure you’ve left plenty of time – the last thing you want to do is be rushing around so close to Christmas!
Make a list
Although you might be pretty good at keeping everything in your head, it’s better to get tasks down on paper so you can see exactly what you need to do and when.
You can tick things off as you go, helping you stay on track and move into your new home at Christmas without forgetting anything.
Acquire packing materials
Packing… you either love it or loathe it. But one thing for sure is that you need to make sure you have the appropriate packing materials to ensure your belongings are protected during transit and storage.
If not, it’s worth opting for a combined packing and house moving service as, for an additional fee, you’ll be supplied with the cardboard boxes, wardrobe cartons, bubble wrap, packing paper, tape, and marker pens you need to get organised.
Start packing
To make the packing process easier, work from top to bottom, starting with the attic and dismantling any large items or belongings that you don’t use daily.
Try to keep items from the same room together and mark every box with its contents. This will make it easy for the home removals team to see what goes where when they get to your new place.
Put Christmas decorations to one side
When moving Christmas decorations, it’s advised you wrap them in bubble wrap and use heavy-duty storage boxes to prevent them from breakage and damage.
Unless you’re the Grinch, the chances are you’ll want to deck the halls as soon as you get the keys to your new home – so load your decorations onto the removal van last, keeping them easily accessible and at less risk of being damaged by items stacked on top of them.
Make plans for your kids
Christmas is a magical time for little ones, but add moving into the mix and it can really unsettle them. If possible, ask friends or relatives if they can look after them until you’ve moved everything in – it’ll likely speed up the process too, as you won’t be worrying about what they’re up to.
Equally, your fur babies need to be looked after while you’re in the midst of a house move. And remember to keep them indoors for the first few days so they don’t end up running away or getting lost.
Do final checks
Before you lock the front door and start your new chapter, it’s worth double-checking every room to ensure you’ve packed everything up (unless you’ve agreed to leave certain items for the new tenants) and closed all the windows.
Take your meter readings before you leave so you can give them to your energy supplier. It’s also worth taking a photo of them or writing them down in case your final bill doesn’t tally.
Change your address
You don’t want Mr Claus and his reindeer to deliver presents to the wrong house, do you?
Updating all the relevant parties (including friends and family) with your new address is crucial.
Depending on where you’re moving to, you may also need to register with a new dentist and doctor.
