Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) – the key to ‘letting go’?

Within the fascinating field of ‘Energy Psychology’ lies a relatively new treatment called EFT – Emotional Freedom Technique.

When I heard it has been known to help some people with serious hoarding issues, my interest was sparked. As I found out more, I realised that EFT has provided thousands of people with relief from a whole manner of problems. And that many of these problems affect my clients, whether they simply have ‘a bit too much stuff’ or suffer from chronic disorganisation and clutter issues.

What is EFT?

The therapist identifies points of ‘energy meridians’ on the client’s body and focuses on a specific problem. The client repeats a positive mantra related to the root cause of the problem. The therapist ‘taps’ their fingers on the end points of the meridians. Kinetic energy is sent to the energy system which intercepts and overcomes the body’s learnt response or negative emotion.

What problems does EFT help overcome?

Self sabotaging behaviours, perfectionism, procrastination, panic, overwhelm, anxiety, depression, addictions, compulsive behaviours and PTSD. This reads like a tick list of issues often affecting my clients. The bottom line is that EFT can help people become unstuck and make simple changes in behaviour which may have been ingrained for years.

What’s great about EFT?

It’s non invasive, pain free, can be self administered and no drugs or equipment are required. The results can be quick, long lasting and often take place within three sessions.

What is the theory behind EFT?

It’s origins lie in ancient Eastern medicine and in the 1920’s, Albert Einstein stated that everything is made up of energy, including the human body. EFT works on the premise that negative emotions are caused by a disruption in the body’s energy system. The ancient system identified 100 meridian points in the body such as on the collarbone and under the eye. These meridians act as ‘paths’ through which bodily energy flows. EFT uses ‘tapping’ on nine meridians and combined with positive affirmations, this channels the energy through the body in a healing way, replacing negative emotions with positive ones.

Traditional talking therapies have their place but EFT is different because instead of dwelling on past events, the focus is on the emotion and behaviour the past events have caused. New intentions are then set and vocalised in conjunction with the tapping, meaning the whole process is focusing on the solution and the change the person is going to make. I’m excited to say that I’m currently training as an EFT practitioner so that I can use the technique on my ‘stuck’ clients if they express an interest.
